Seychelles: The general Council of Reunion will support the restoration of the historic cemetery of Bel-Air
Nassimah Dindar, the President of the general Council of Reunion announced on Monday 28 October that the Department will bring its know-how and its support for the restoration of the tombs of the Bel-Air cemetery located on the island of Mahé in the outskirts of Victoria, capital of Seychelles.

"Reunion will not only bring their expertise in the restoration of the tombs, but they will also work to close the cemetery," has said Minister of Culture and Tourism, Alain St. Ange.

The Bel-Air cemetery dates from the early 1780s and closed in 1902.
The former burial site suffered the ravages of time with graves and the wrought iron cross falling in rusty ruins in the midst of rubble of lime.

Many funerary monuments of the early French settlers in the archipelago were especially erected in the heart of the cemetery of Bel-Air.
