Mayotte: 43% plant species of Mayotte threatened

Last week, the Committee of French experts of the IUCN (International Union for the conservation of nature) published a pioneer analysis that lists some 610 species (ferns, trees, orchids and other plants with flowers) in the composition of the indigenous flora of the island of Mayotte.
The Conservatoire botanique de Mascarin (CBNM) also participated in the research.
The document on the vascular flora of Mayotte highlights that 43% of plant species of Mayotte is threatened, that is 264 listed species. (See red list of the flora of Mayotte of July 2, 2014).
The main threats identified today remain the activities of clearing in agriculture and development, competition with exotic species, sampling, trampling as well as the phenomenon of soil erosion.
