Mauritius wants to start large-scale aquaculture of sea cucumbers

The Ministry of Fisheries is about to launch next October in Mauritius a highly wanted sea cucumber breeding project by Asians and which are sold once dry to around 500 dollars (450 euros) per kilo. A project which had already been on the drawing board since August 2013.
The other benefit of this large-scale aquaculture is regeneration of the ecosystem of the Mauritian lagoons since sea cucumbers have the capability of purifying sea water.
As a reminder, a female sea cucumber can lay several hundred thousands of eggs at once and this, if the conditions of its natural environment are optimum.
