While so far, no medical examination was required to obtain a driver's license on the island except for seniors with vision problems, the Mauritian authorities are endeavoring to review their count and check if all drivers are able to get behind the wheel safely.

Medical tests could thus be introduced upstream to identify future candidates with among others alcoholism, epilepsy, problems with vision or suffering from diseases requiring the use of psychotropic.

This measure would first cover drivers working in the public transport sector and professionals of the road as the truck, ambulance drivers, drivers of school transport and taxi drivers.

Tests would then practice on a regular basis and could lead to a renewal of the permit in case of discovery of medical conditions which are incompatible with the conduct, as the newspaper L'Express of Mauritius relates.
