Mauritius: The local production of litchi decline this year

Litchi production is expected to reach 800 tons in 2014, while it was around 1,500 tons the previous year, down from 700 tons.
Thus, the first litchis on market stalls in Mauritius were two weeks late this year.
According professionals of the litchi industry on the island, this decline is linked to climate with the presence of an anticyclone during blooming season and also a marked by drought.
Concerning the export activity, 250 tons will be sent this year and early in 2015 to the European markets which was 300 tons previously.
The litchis is currently selling from 200 rupees to 300 rupees per kilo in Mauritius *, as indicated by the L'Express newspaper of Mauritius.

* One euro roughly equivalent to 41 rupees.
