Mauritius: The leader of the MSM, Pravind Jugnauth, obtains the right to justice of not to provide fingerprints for the new biometric identity card
The leader of the MSM (Militant Socialist Movement) and former Minister of finance, Pravind Jugnauth, obtained Friday, October 4, 2013 from justice, after a request for an injunction on questions of constitutionality, the right not to provide fingerprints in the context of the introduction of the new biometric in Mauritius identity card.

Counsel Me Roshi Bhadain has thus put forward before Judge David Chan "the absence of 'regulations' on the fate of the data collected, which is illegal, and unconstitutional interference with private life that represents this new system", as the site lexpress.mu relates.

As a reminder, Jugnauth lambasted on Saturday last, the introduction by the government from October 1 of the new biometric national identity assimilated to a "political control" card.

The leader of the MSM had referred to "an attack on the privacy of Mauritians" because these new biometric identity cards are according to him "a threat to democracy" and the holding of free and democratic elections, as indicated by the Dimanche L'hebdo newspaper.
 
The leader of the MSM had also vigorously denounced this new biometric identity card holders had to leave their fingerprints, which went against the according to the constitutional principle of the right to privacy in Mauritius.

And Pravind Jugnauth pointed out that under the terms of the recently amended law, the holders of this card biometric identity after a period of one year, would incur a fine of 100,000 rupees (2,500 euros) and five years in prison.

The new biometric identity card is designed in polycarbonate and custom data with laser etched graphics.
 
Are particular encrypted within the chip, vital, ID number, surname, first name, surname at birth, sex, date of birth, photo, fingerprints of the thumb and forefinger, address and a digital certificate
