Mauritius: The authorities plan to reduce the number of foreign workers employed in the construction sector

The Ministry of public infrastructure is harnessed to define a strategic document aimed at reducing in the construction sector the number of foreign workers to allow a most important hiring of local people.

The document thus wants to plan over five years various measures consistently will reduce the percentage of foreign workers in the construction sector of Mauritius.
But some trade unionists like Reaz Chuttoo want to alert the authorities against the stigma of foreign workers on the island, as related by the newspaper Le Défi Quotidien.

"It is an excessive liberalization of employment in the sector which has resulted in a multiplication of the number of foreigners employed in the construction sector", supports Reaz Chuttoo.

For others, like Bhooshan Ramloll, vice president of the association of manufacturers on the island and who has actively participated in the preparation of this strategic document, it is essential to develop in parallel with the implementation of this strategic document "better training" of Mauritian workers in the construction sector.
As a reminder, the sector of the construction in Mauritius represents 54,000 people with identified foreign workers 6,000.
