Mauritius: The ICT industry, the third pillar of the Mauritian economy




The sector of information technology and communication (ICT) currently contributes 6.4% of gross domestic product (GDP) of the island.
 
For the Minister responsible of the sector, Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrun, the contribution of ICT in GDP may reach 7% by year end 2014.
 
The ICT sector is thus establishing itself as the third pillar of the Mauritian economy today.
 
Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrun wishes in particular to make Mauritius become a connected and secured island.
 
The minister also recently reminded the commitment of the Government of Mauritius for the growth of new technologies and highlights the importance of public-private partnership to further develop the ICT sector on the island.
 
As a reminder, at the end of 2013 some 19,242 people were counted in 631 companies in the information technology and communications sector in Mauritius.
