Mauritius: Self-sufficiency in potatoes in crosshairs

Mauritius is approaching self-sufficiency in potatoes.
Thus with a planned production of 20,000 tons in 2014 against 16.450 tons in 2013, self-sufficiency in potatoes this year should be around 80% in Mauritius.
Approximately 230 farmers and about 10 cooperatives are working to meet the demand of the local market, as reported by the newspaper L'Express of Mauritius.
The production of potatoes is particularly favored by different Government plans, including the possibility for the farmer to pay only 10% of the amounts committed for the purchase of seeds, the remaining balance are refunded at the end of the harvest.
As a reminder, the annual consumption of potatoes in Mauritius lies around the 23,000 tons.
