Mauritius: Professional fishermen progressively less in number

The number of fishermen in Mauritius has declined steadily and profession had trouble seducing the new generations.
Thus, to generate increasing number of vocations in the trade, the Mauritian authorities will provide qualified training on the deep sea fishing and in particular enable traditional fishermen to go outside the lagoons to bring fish in their nets.
Today 2,066 professional fishermen maintain their skills in Mauritius, with a traditional hook and line fishing. 15 years ago, they were about 15,000 to draw their lines to support their families.
