Mauritius: Over 23,560 monkeys exported in slightly more than three years

23,564 long-tailed monkeys have been exported between 1 January 2012 and 30 April 2015 for biomedical research purposes towards European laboratories such as France, Germany, UK, and Spain as well as to American laboratories.
Canada, Mexico and Singapore are also listed as host countries. A market which has generated more than 2 billion rupees * in its wake.
The organization of official statistics of the island, Statistics Mauritius, thus reports that 2.124 primates have suffered a similar fate during the first quarter 2015 for a total of around 182 million rupees.
As a reminder, Mauritius ranks the second among the countries exporting the largest number of macaques after China.
