Ominicane company is set to consolidate its presence in the African continent. The Mauritian sugar producer company expects to develop hydoelectric power plants in East Africa.

The company has therefore, through its subsidiary Omnicane Energy Limited, signed an agreement with Hydroneo Afrique, a subsidiary of French group Mecamidi, one of the world leaders in the construction of hydroelectric power plant.

The investment project which is estimated to be more than 125 million dollars, that is more than 3,5 billion rupees (nearly 92,3 million euros) aims in the development and in the construction of small and medium hydroelectric power plants in East Africa.

This 50/50 partnership concerns the development and construction of hydroelectric power plants of size ranging from 5 to 25 MW (megawatts) in East Africa.

The agreement is set to accelerate the existing projects of Mecamidi which were launched in 2011. Electricity generation is expected as from the beginning of 2016 while works on the hydroelectric power plants site are expected to start before the end of this year.

Omnicane, based at l'Escalier, in the south of the island, was launched in July 2009 through a rebranding strategy of sugar cane factory Mon Trésor Mon Désert, which was shut down in 2007. This long established sugar cane group in Mauritius has its origins going as far back as in the 1850s.
