Mauritius: End of strike in the sugar industry




The strike was called off in the sugar industry this morning in Mauritius. The 4,300 workers have returned back to work after more than a week of strike.
 
The owners and the unions were able to reach agreement on the 13% increase in the salaries of planters and which will be spread over three years, that is, 7% in 2014, 3% in 2015 and 3% in 2016.
 
Shakeel Mohamed, Minister of Labour, particularly saluted the courage of employees of the local sugar industry stayed mobilised in their action.
 
The President of millers grouped within the Mauritius Sugar Producers Association for his part evoked the future challenges of the Mauritian sugar industry.
 
"We have a significant challenge to finish the cutting season," said Gilbert Espitalier Noël.
