Port-Louis is managed by a woman for the first time in its history. She was elected mayor of the capital yesterday in the presence of several guests, including Paul Raymond Bérenger, leader of the Opposition of the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM) party respectively. Dorine Chukowry thus became the first woman Lord Mayor in the history of Mauritius.

She had been most recently Deputy of the Mayor before becoming the first mayor of the capital. The first magistrate of Port Louis is the mother of two sons and is Rector of profession.

Dorine Chukowry says that the renovation of the theatre of Port Louis is her number one priority for 2014. The old theatre in the capital is closed since 2008 due to work but the renovation project stayed in the drawer. However, the latter does not linger to say that as early as January, she will address on file with the theatre to renovate this gem of the Mauritian heritage, as specified in the L' Express newspaper.

She pointed out that she would use the budget of 64 million rupees (about 1.5 million euros) for her work. However, the renovation of the old theatre requires a sum of 300 million rupees (more than 6.9 million euros) but the first woman Lord Mayor is very confident that she will be able to renovate it.
