Mauritius: Decline in expenditure of tourists for the first nine months of 2013




While Mauritius has received from 1 January to 30 September 694,443 tourists compared to 675,584 travelers on the same calendar period last year, the industry sector recorded a decline in expenditure of tourists compared to 2012.

The Mauritian tourism industry has earned 29.1 billion rupees (727.5 million euros) from January to September, a decrease of 9% compared to the previous year.
 
For example, a tourist spent on an average stay for 47,298 rupees (1,182 euros) in September 2012 while this amount a year later is passed to 41,911 rupees (1047 euros).

At the same time during the first nine months of the year, the occupancy rate of hotel establishments which stood at 60% experienced a slight decline compared to 2012 with 59% recorded from January to September 2013, as the newspaper Le Défi Quotidien relates.
