Mauritius: Commemoration of the 180th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Le Morne

Mauritius has celebrated yesterday, Sunday February 1, 2015, the 180th anniversary of the abolition of slavery on the island.
The official ceremony took place at Le Morne in the presence of the Prime Minister Sir Anerood Jugnauth, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Xavier-Luc Duval Tourism and President Kailash Purryag.
A minute of silence has also been observed in the memory of the famous ségatier Michel Legris, who died in late last week at the age of 83 years and after 40 years of committed career.
As a reminder, the mountain of Le Morne, Le Morne Brabant is considered as the symbol of the slaves' fight for liberty and was the sanctuary of fugitive slaves. Le Morne Cultural Landscape is classified World Heritage by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) since 6 July 2008, thus recognizing the historic site in memory of slavery in Mauritius.
