Mauritius: Cardiovascular disease, the main cause of mortality on the island




A recent report from the Ministry of health revealed that cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of mortality in Mauritius for 2013 with 31% of deceased persons concerned who suffered from heart problems.
 
Last year, the number of patients hospitalised with heart problems had however decreased by approximately 6% compared to the figures recorded since 2005.
 
115.073 patients were thus treated in cardiac units in different public hospitals and cardiology center located in Pamplemousses, in the North of the Island.
 
The second cause of death on the island remains diabetes with 25.1% deaths registered in Mauritius followed by cancer which is responsible for 13.4% of deaths, as reported by the newspaper L'Express of Mauritius.
