Mauritius: About 10,000 hectares of sugar cane lost over five years in the island

The Mauritian sugar production in 2014 has slightly exceeded the 400,000 tons of sugar for some 50,693 hectares of crop operated last year. In 2009, 60,800 hectares were dedicated to the Mauritius sugar cane plantation.
As a reminder, the sugar cane cultivation in the island today represents 0.8% of GDP whereas this figure was 1.3% in 2011. The agricultural sector in all its component represented 3.1% of GDP in 2014.
