Mauritius: A 2012 sugar campaign victim of drought

The sugar campaign of 2012 was weaker in terms of tonnage of sugar than the previous year because of drought that lasted for months in Mauritius has had a detrimental effect on the quality of the production.

409,200 tons of sugar has been produced from canes collected on the island. A number decreased by 26,000 tons compared to the sugar campaign of 2011 where the production reached 435,200 tons.

A decline in the sugar industry of Mauritius which represents a net loss of 429 million rupees (11 million euro).
