Mauritius: 68,600 fines for speeding between January and mid-November 2014

68,600 contraventions have been drawn against motorists caught speeding on roads in Mauritius between January 1 and November 13, 2014 by forty speed cameras in operation on the island.
With a fixed penalty of 2,000 rupees* per offense, the revenue of the State of Mauritius is thus amounted to approximately 137.2 million rupees, as indicated by L'Express newspaper of Mauritius.
However, this is not the exact amount collected by the Mauritian authorities, since many motorists appeal against their tickets in court and sometimes they are foreign drivers - tourists visiting Mauritius at the time of the offense - who leave the island without paying.
* One euro roughly equivalent to 41 rupees
