Mauritius: 6494 monkeys exported in 2012 for biomedical research




Some 6.494 monkeys have been exported in 2012 to Europeans and Americans laboratories for biomedical research purposes, either increased over 8% compared to the figures of 2011 according to the official statistics body of the island, Mauritius Statistics, as shown the newspaper L'Express of Mauritius.

Mauritius thus ranks second of macaques-exporting countries after China.
 
As a reminder, the export of primates reported in Mauritius not less than 610 million rupees in 2012 (15.250.000 euros) and 609 million rupees in 2011 (15.225.000 euros) with nearly 2,000 jobs in the sector.

The Mauritian authorities are currently working on the Bill of the pre-clinical Research Bill, aimed at developing a major industry on the island.
