Mauritius: 544 people victims of abuse from January to August 2013 on the island
The Ministry of social security through the body for the protection of the elderly, Welfare and Elderly Persons Protection Unit established in 2006 has officially recorded 544 cases of abuse from January to August 2013.

In 2012, 726 cases of abuse against older persons were counted in Mauritius against 674 in 2011 and 797 for 2010.

From 2006 to 2009, 3.382 cases were reported falling in the majority of cases of psychological abuse.

While the international day of the elderly is celebrated on Tuesday, the authorities recall the two hotlines in service (172-199) so that the Mauritian public can denounce cases of abuse observed.

Mauritians are invited also to move directly to the 20 regional offices of the Ministry of social security to report recorded cases of abuse against older persons, as the weekend newspaper relates.
