Mauritius: 300 million plastic bags used annually

About 300 million plastic bags are used annually in Mauritius according to latest official figures.
Prohibited as from 2016, plastic bags will be replaced by biodegradable bags manufactured from potato and vacoa, has recently announced by the Minister of the Environment, Raj Dayal.
The Mauritian authorities, as announced in March 2015 in the budget, and in order to protect the island's environment have decided to ban on 1 January 2016 the use of plastic bags in the country.
