Mauritius: 1,500 signatures collected in a petition against the practices of witchcraft on the island




The Mauritian association, Markaz Al Farouk, who has campaigned actively for a few weeks on the ground against the recurrent practice of witchcraft in Mauritius on the part of the longanis (1), has already collected some 1,500 signatures of support to his petition to strengthen in particular the criminal penalties.
 
This document subject to the approval of the population wants the crime of witchcraft to be more severely punished on the island at height of fined 50,000 rupees (2) and 5 years ' imprisonment.
 
A copy of the petition will be so filed this weekend on the office of the Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, and also sent to the highest rank of the police forces in Mauritius and the leader of the opposition, Paul Bérenger.
 
"The authorities must react against these evil practices that are gaining ground and affect 8 families on 10... Criminal acts were committed on behalf of black magic and this has disrupted many families", vigorously denounces the Markaz Al Farouk association.
