Mauritius: 15% of Mauritians do not own a bank account

According to a recent study, about 15% of Mauritians do not own a bank account in the approximately twenty bank establishments operating on the island.
On a population estimated at some 1.261.208 inhabitants, there are about 134.674 Mauritians who remain outside the bank system.
For 59% among them, the lack of revenues explains their choice.
29% also judge that after having paid their household expenses, they are no longer in a position to fill their bank account with a “sufficient amount”, as reported the Le Défi Quotidien newspaper.
