Mauritius: 1.376 domestic violence cases recorded between January and September 2013

Minister of Gender Equality, Mireille Martin, said last Thursday that her services were identified between January and September 2013, 1,376 cases of domestic violence in Mauritius, the vast majority of victims are women, as the newspaper Le Défi Quotidien relates.

As a reminder, the Department of gender equality has awarded since 2009 to a dozen non-governmental organizations, 12.8 million rupees (320,000 euros) through local projects, to combat violence against women in Mauritius.

A recent study by the SADC (Southern African Development Community) also revealed that a quarter of Mauritian women have been victims of violence and about the same percentage of men confessed that he had already committed violent acts against their partners.
