Madagascar and China on the same wavelength concerning illegal exports of rosewood

The Chinese ambassador in the Island, Yang Min, has renewed the full support of the Chinese authorities to fight against illegal exports of rosewood towards his country. A political choice clearly put forward during an interview between the diplomat and the Malagasy Minister of Environment, Ralava Beboarimisa.
"We support the government of Madagascar in this fight", recently said the Chinese ambassador.
The Malagasy government wants to rely in the fight against this scourge on the 2011 ordinance that severely sanctions persons involved in the illegal trade of rosewood, with a term of imprisonment of two to five years.
As a reminder, rosewood, a protected species in danger of extinction, is at the heart of a prohibited traffic destined for Asia.
Traffickers exploit a lucrative parallel market where a kilo of the precious wood is sold at around 500 dollars (440 euros). 2011-01 The order also complements a decree issued March 31, 2010 in Madagascar, which prohibits logging and trade of rosewood and ebony.
