Madagascar: The fight against migratory locusts goes on

Before the end of June 2015, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reminds that 7.4 million dollar is still missing to support anti-locust campaign underway in Madagascar.
In the absence of sufficient funding, a new invasion of migratory locusts could affect the country and nullifying all the efforts made since 2013. Thus from 9 October 2014 to 31 May 2015, a total surface of 609,466 hectares has been treated mainly through aerial spraying.
FAO has scheduled three consecutive locust campaigns. The total cost of these campaigns had been initially evaluated at 43.9 million.
The swarms of locusts since April 2012 have already caused extensive damage on corn, rice and other cereal crop plantations.
