Madagascar: The Island intends to double its rice production by 2018

The Malagasy Minister of Agriculture, Roland Ravatomanga, envisages a rice production almost doubled at the horizon of 2018.
The forecasts of the FAO (Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture) at the end of May should drain in its wake some 4.3 million tons of rice in 2014 after a quite difficult harvest in 2013.
The contribution of new hybrid seeds from China with a productivity of 10 tons per hectare and the construction of new dams in parallel to create new fully irrigated farming areas should thus allow the island to exceed 8,000 four tons of rice in less than four years in production, as reported by the Midi Madagasikara newspaper.
As a reminder, the harvest campaign 2014 had been better as reason of the fight conducted by the island against the migratory locusts.
Rice imports in Madagascar had been twice more significant between 2012 and 2013, a record in the field.
Over 410.000 tons of rice in 2013 had been imported, that is, double of imports in 2012.
