Madagascar: Ringworm infection in young children is gaining ground in the region of Antananarivo

A dozen children from disadvantaged neighborhoods are victims of ringworm in the region of the Madagascan capital Antananarivo, while the rainy season enters its active phase.

The fungus in the hair of young children continues to spread because of the unsanitary conditions of their habitat daily. The infection worries the local health services.

Two cases are reported each week in clinics accommodating sick children. The authorities fear that the number of children affected by ringworm is actually much more but many parents prefer to themselves treat the disease with treatment summaries made from paraffin.

Unnecessary treatments since ringworm should be treated for at least three months with antifungal pills to be taken orally and in addition to antimicrobial solutions.
