Madagascar: Over 363,000 tons of rice imported in 2014 in the Island

About 363,423 tons of rice have been imported into the Island in 2014, a decrease of 13% of the tonnage landed in Madagascar. The strong tropical storm Chedza which has hit the rice region more than week ago might nevertheless reverse this trend in the following weeks.
Approximately 410,373 tons of rice in 2013 were from importation, that is, double imports in 2012.
As a reminder, the rice sector in Madagascar has attracted in its wake some 4.3 million tons of rice in 2014 after a particularly challenging 2013 harvest. Rice production in 2014 was especially better because of locust control conducted in the Island against migratory locusts.
