Madagascar: New possible threat of migratory locusts in the Island

The financing to complete the 2014-2015 locust campaign concern the authorities as well as the United Nations for Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This last warning that if some 6.1 million are not found quickly from donors, another invasion of migratory locusts could threaten the Island and eventually reduce to nothing all the efforts made since 2013.
As a reminder, over 1.3 million hectares of land have already been treated with pesticides by aerial spraying. FAO had anticipated that at least three consecutive locust campaigns since September 2013 would be required to fully treat areas which has been hit hard by the invasion of migratory locusts. The total cost of these campaigns had been evaluated initially at 43.9 million dollars.
Swarms of locusts since April 2012 have already resulted severe damage on corn plantations, rice and other cereal crops.
