Madagascar: More than 6,000 rosewood logs seized in two districts in the North East of the Island

The Malagasy authorities fighting against the illegal trafficking of rosewood of Madagascar recorded significant success during the first two weeks of December with the seizure of some 6,150 rosewood logs in the districts of Antalaha Vohémar in the North East of the Island.
As a reminder, rosewood, a protected species in danger of extinction, is at the heart of a prohibited traffic to Asia. Traffickers exploit a lucrative black market where precious wood kilo is sold at around 500 dollars (400 euros).
The Malagasy power wants to fight against this trafficking on the order of 8 August 2011, which severely punishes those involved in the illegal trade of rosewood, with a prison sentence of two to five years.
