Madagascar: More than 440 zebu thieves killed by the gendarmerie

Malagasy gendarmerie officials have lately communicated the balance sheet of the operation "Coup d'arrêt" launched in mid-June 2014 to fight against abuses perpetrated by zebu thieves (dahalo) in the south of the island.
445 dahalo were thus killed by forces of order and 13 policemen have been killed by zebu thieves’ bullets. 115 villagers also died. Approximately 25,000 zebu cattle were also stolen, around 360 attacks and about 10,755 animals were returned to their owners.
As a reminder, the zebu theft is derived from ancient traditions Malagasy, but still well established in the hinterland. Symbol of virility before marriage, criminal gangs have diverted from its original meaning, to transform it into a lucrative traffic in Madagascar.
