Madagascar: More than 280,000 tons of rice imported during the first three months of the year

The Observatory of Rice and the Network of Rural Observatories of Madagascar recently highlighted that over 280,000 tons of rice were imported during the first three months of 2014.
"This abundance of our imports and the arrival of the early production resulted in a sharp drop in the price of rice on the markets at the national level compared to the previous year", inter alia, emphasized Rivolala Bezaka, at the head of the rice and the network of observatories rural Observatory, as reported by Midi Madagasikara.
As a reminder, over 410.000 tons of rice in 2013 stemmed from the importation, double imports of 2012.
And according to the latest FAO forecast *, the rice sector in Madagascar should drain in its wake 4.3 million tons of rice at the end of the 2014 campaign after a harvest 2013 "particularly difficult".
