Madagascar: Leprosy, a shameful disease in impoverished areas of the Island

While over 230,000 new cases of leprosy have been identified in 2012 across the world Madagascar counts annually some 1,600 cases of the infectious disease.
In the Island, it is the southern and west that the number of leprosy patients remains the largest in poor and remote rural areas of the hinterland. Where the beliefs remain very still vivid with disease considered shameful by the population.
