Madagascar: Issuance of passports temporarily suspended

National passports is temporarily suspended except for duly substantiated emergency situations requiring medical evacuation.
No application will be thus received 11-24 November next, due to the introduction of a new passport with an electronic chip.
It should enter into force on the 1st of September last to avoid forgeries and facilitate checks at the borders.
"The passports with this chip and the equipment that goes with it are already in place, but our infrastructure is not yet ready. We're going to expand our premises before installing this equipment," said the Divisional Commissioner Mamy Jean-Pierre Andrianisa, director of information and control of immigration and emigration (DRCIE).
"In addition to the digital photograph of the holder, his marital status and his fingerprints are stored in the chip," detailed the Divisional Commissioner Mamy Jean-Pierre Andrianisa, as indicated by the newspaper Les Nouvelles of Madagascar.
