Madagascar: Germany ready to cooperate in the fight against rosewood trafficking in the Island

The new German Ambassador in Tananarive in post since last August, Harald Gehrig, recently announced that his country would be willing to help the Malagasy authorities in the fight against rosewood trafficking in the Island.
A reforestation program of 6 million plants at the heart of Madagascar has also been in place for several weeks by the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the German Embassy, as reported by the newspaper Midi Madagasikara.
As a reminder, rosewood, protected species and threatened with extinction, is at the heart of a prohibited traffic to Asia.
Traffickers take advantage of a lucrative black market where a kilo of precious wood is sold for around 500 dollars (401 euros).
