Madagascar: Funders unblocked 690 million euros for the development of agricultural production in the Island

Donors, who met over the weekend in Madagascar to discuss urgently of the threatened food security in the extreme south of the Big Island by drought and famine with 350,000 inhabitants exposed, decided to release 690 million of euros of aid for a period of 5 to 7 years for the development of a better agricultural local production.
The European Union, the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), the African Development Bank (ADB) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and others have put their hands in the wallet. Of the 36 million hectares of arable land, only 3 million hectares are cultivated in Madagascar.
As a reminder, it is the Anosy regions (Amboasary South) and Androy (Beloha, Tsihombe and Bekily) which are particularly affected by this food insecurity. A dozen deaths from kéré were previously identified. Some people eat cactus and tamarinds to fight against hunger. The local press has reported for its part more than 100 dead. Some families are ashamed to admit the real cause of the death (s) of the close ones.
