Madagascar: Five dead in Mananjary killed by gendarmes following intense riots

Violent clashes have lately opposed law enforcement and several hundred angry residents during riots in the city of Mananjary located on the eastern coast of the Island.
The police have made use of their weapons and killed five civilians who were demonstrating against a possible police blunder and have attacked the police barracks in the area. Three policemen have been injured and houses were burned down. On site, offices and schools were closed.
The Secretary of State for Police quickly dispatched to the scene urged people to a rapid return in calm and pledged to punish the perpetrators of police gunfire. "We will severely punish the gendarmerie elements who shot on the crowd. We promise that the gendarmes will not shoot people. The state will take care of all expenses associated with the burial of the victims,” he said.
