Madagascar: English in primary school is not the flavor of the teachers of the Island

While the Prime Minister Jean Ravelonarivo announced his firm intention last February of developing the learning of English in primary schools, the National Board of Education is currently working on the issue and the feasibility of the project. However for the teaching staff of which a great majority do not do not master English, the learning the language of Shakespeare in undergraduate institutions is far from being unanimous.
"We already have the bad experience with Malgachization which should have been a success if its implementation has been well prepared and well-studied, but not precipitated and for ideological reasons more than educational," say several teachers.
For teachers, preparation and consultation around such major system must be over several years, and this, before a pedagogical program is provided to students.
On the side of parents, their opinions are equally divided on this introduction, learning English is seen as an opportunity for half of them while the other half are skeptical about the introduction of this language project.
