Madagascar: About a hundred endemic freshwater turtles released in the National Park of Ankarafantsika

During the last weekend of March 2015, 114 endemic freshwater turtles born in captivity, Malagasy big-headed turtle or "Rere" and today aged between 3 to 7 years have been reintroduced to the wild.
Freshwater turtles threatened with extinction according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) have been released into the lake on the side of Ravelobe Ampijoroa at the heart of the national park of Ankarafantsika. It is the fourth time that such an operation to release this species is being held in this national park located in the northwest of the Island.
Due to its large size, its flesh and eggs are highly prized by local people who dangerously threaten the survival of the species.
