Madagascar: A potential agricultural area extensively under-exploited

According to officials of the plan of action for rural development (PADR) who have recently worked on securing land in Madagascar, exploitation in the island unfold about three million hectares of agricultural area while the Malagasy territory has at the same time a potential land of some 58 million hectares available.
Farmers thus operate from small plots of land and abandon larger areas due to a lack of financial resources to devote themselves to a farm at larger scale, according to the newspaper Les Nouvelles of the Madagascar.
As a reminder, despite five years of political crisis under the transitional regime which have severely impacted the Malagasy economy, which recorded a net slowdown, the Malagasy authorities may still nevertheless rely on an agricultural sector that alone still represents 45% of the gross national product (GDP) and drains every year in its wake about 27% of Madagascar's gross domestic product.
In addition, 40% of exported goods are from the agricultural sector.
