Madagascar: A possible decline in the Malagasy vanilla production for the 2015 harvest

While vanilla production in 2014 has reached 2,000 tons for export, professionals in the sector are concerned about a possible decline in half of their local production during the next harvest in June 2015.
In 2014, the sales price per kilo for export market amounts to 50 to 60 dollars for Madagascar's green gold.
As a reminder, Madagascar produces more than 60% of the vanilla exported all over the world. 80,000 farmers in Madagascar live in the intensive cultivation of this orchid fertilized by hand. A cottage industry which employs in the vast plantations of the North of the Island, in the heart of humid tropical regions, a cheap workforce.
