Incitement to natality in Mauritius

While Mauritius currently counts nearly 1.3 million inhabitants, the family planning organization of the country the Mauritius Family Planning and Welfare Association (MFPWA) will soon encourage Mauritian couples to have children in numbers through a major awareness campaign.
MFPWA want to reverse the declining birth rate in the island. In the 60s, the fertility rate was approximately merrily 6 children per woman. Today, the fertility rate of the Mauritian woman is 1.4, far from the 2.1 needed to maintain a sustainable population generation after generation.
"We understand that we are dealing with an aging population and that this will have serious consequences for the economy in a few years," said Vidya Charan, director of the family planning organization.
