Comoros: The Arab League insists on "the French occupation of the Comorian Island" of Mayotte

While the 25th Summit of the League of Arab States was held in the Kuwait 25 and March 26, 2014 and where was present the Comorian president Ikililou Dhoinine, the Arab League has reminded that "the French occupation of the Comorian Island (Editor's Note: Department Mayotte) was unlawful", as reported by the Comorian newspaper Alwatwan.
For years, Arab leaders put forward the "rejection of the French occupation" and urged France "to continue the dialogue with the Comoros Government to reach a settlement that guarantees the return of the island Mayotte under the sovereignty of the Comoros".
As a reminder, the Comoros, under the leadership of Ahmed Abdallah, declared their independence on 6 July 1975.
The referendum of December 1974, majority (95%) in Grande Comore, Anjouan and Moheli, to sovereignty of all Comorian islands, sealed the fate of the new State of the Comoros.
The island of Mayotte decided nevertheless to remain on the sidelines of this movement of independence and voted in 1976, when two referendums on 8 February and 11 April, for his commitment to the Republic.
Since Thursday, March 31, 2011, Mayotte acceded to the status of French Department becoming the 5th overseas department.
