48th anniversary of the Independance of Mauritius

On the 12th March, Mauritius will celebrate the 48th anniversary of its independence.

The independence of the island from the United Kingdom was declared on the 12th March 1968, following the election of the 7th August 1967.

Mauritius has remained a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and celebrates the anniversary of this historic date every year.

To mark the 48th anniversary, Air Mauritius intends to participate in the celebrations by providing helicopter rides at promotional prices. The route will be as follows: the airport, the Trou Kanaka Crater, Grand Bassin, the Black River Gorges, Chamarel Waterfall, the Chamarel Coloured Earths, a view of the Morne Brabant and the airport.

On this day, the country’s flag will fly high on various buildings.

This emblem was adopted on the day of independence. It is made up of four horizontal bands of different colours that mean the following:
  • red is the colour of the blood of the slaves
  • blue is the colour of the sky and the ocean
  • yellow is the colour of the sun and unity
  • green is the colour of nature
