The rice sector in eastern Madagascar threatened by a lack of rainfall
The region of Alaotra-Mangoro in the province Tamatave in eastern Madagascar has experienced a deficit of rainfall for several weeks. With a catastrophic month of December in terms of rainfall, it is the entire rice sector which is threatened by the whims of the weather on this part of the Big Island.

Farmers in the Alaotra-Mangoro region have already transplanted rice in land and are desperately waiting to see their providential rain to see their hard work bear fruit in the next harvest.

A lack of consistent rain, the rice may dry out and kill the seeds of rice. A problematic situation for the Alaotra-Mangoro region that can produce in a single season over 340,000 tonnes of rice, on around 50,000 hectares of irrigated rice fields.
