The Museum of Music & Instruments from the Indian Ocean

The Museum of Music & Instruments from the Indian Ocean
Situated in the verdant Cirque de Salazie—at the heart of Hell-Bourg, which is classified as one of “the most beautiful villages in France”—, La Maison Morange, formerly an old inn located at Rue de la Cayenne, was reopened as the Museum of Music and Instruments from the Indian Ocean on Thursday 5 November 2015. This cultural facility in Réunion has been ranked among the world’s top 5 collections by the Museum of Music in Paris.

Robert Fontlup and François Ménard—two collectors at the forefront of this museum—are offering the public “The Meeting of Cultures”: a presentation of the musical history of people of European, Indonesian, African, Indian, Chinese, and Madagascan origins. It is a remarkable visiting collection of 1,500 popular, precious, and unusual instruments. Visitors will embark on a fun journey of musical and visual discovery where the different cultures—in all their glory—will be shared. Gongs, drums, and metallophones are exhibited in spaces that are themed around India, Africa, Madagascar, and China.
