Mayotte: More than 260 turtles killed by poachers in 2014 on the Perfume Island




A poacher who had attacked Acoua turtles, and who had butchered them to get their flesh, was sentenced last Friday to 12 months imprisonment of which 9 firm months.
 
As a reminder, the agents of nature brigade assigned to the protection of the fauna and flora of Mayotte have recorded more than 260 dead hawksbill turtles, victims of poaching on Perfume Island in 2014.
 
Mahoran beaches welcome annually about 2,000 turtles who lay their eggs in the sand. Poaching of sea turtles in Mayotte is liable to a penalty of at least one year imprisonment and subject to a fine of 15,000 euro.
